Singapore to Kuala Lumpur

Today was my last day in Singapore for this trip.  Not to break tradition, I had the same breakfast as the other days except that I found out today that they do freshly squeezed juices at breakfast (took me 4 days to work that out). The choice this morning was carrot or apple. Who drinks a vegetable for breakfast? So obviously I went for apple.  We really do need to get a juicer like that – the apple juice was very good.

My last meeting was frosingapore airportm 8am until 12:30pm today. Normally this meeting starts at 8:30am but due to the length of the agenda it started at 8am. We were warned numerous times that it was an 8am start.  At 8am everyone was present except the President who chairs the meeting.  At 8:15am he breezes in and says “sorry I thought it started at 8:30am” – seriously!?! And he is German – there goes that stereotype.  The meeting went on so long that I eventually had to leave because I had to check out of my room by 1pm and it was still going on at 12:50pm.

My flight to Kuala Lumpur was only at 6:45pm so I had a lot of time to kill and not really anywhere to go.  After considering it for while I eventually settled on going to the airport early because I could at least use the lounge there and get some lunch for free. Singapore Airport is one of the best in the world. It is very organised, well laid out etc etc. The photo is of inside the terminal building. They have a whole orchard garden inside. Quite amazing.

toilet1I just spent the time in the Singapore airlines lounge which had everything I needed – food and Wifi.  The only other thing I did was go to the toilet. What is it about countries toilet habits?! “Please mind your step – squatting pan” … I didn’t dare try that out.

I flew from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur on Singapore Airlines. (Helen you can skip the rest of this paragraph and just go onto the next one.) Where do they find so many good looking air hostesses?! I thought it would be rude to take a photo or two but was tempted to prove my point. This was only the second time that I have flown Singapore Airlines and there service is ridiculously good. The air hostess offered to help me put my suitcase in the overhead compartment. She said “We can do it together”!?! I really didn’t think I was looked that weak! I saw another air hostess stand on a chair to help someone put their suitcase in the overhead. And just in case there is any confusion, this was on economy class for an hour flight. They really do impress me. When you fly an Asian airline you get another whole view of what service should be like.

We left exactly on time and arrived exactly on time. KL airport is a long way out of the centre of KL itself. We (I am with the branch manager from Singapore) got through passport quickly and then we took the train from the airport to KL (takes about 30 minutes without stopping). Then a taxi from the station to the Shangri-La Hotel (http://www.shangri-la.com/kualalumpur/shangrila/) which is a very nice hotel (better than the one in Singapore I would say).

This is my first time to Malaysia and hard to get an impression in the dark but it seems quite well developed and well run. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.  By the way this is country number 38 for me.  If anyone can tell me exactly which the 38 countries are then I will buy you a gift from somewhere during the remainder of my trip.

Singapore Day 4

Today started with an early meeting with the American ‘conqueror the whole world’ counterparts. It was an entertaining and interesting meeting.  Definitely the best meeting I have attended so far since we have been here.  Our President started the meeting with “Let’s get married before we share any secrets” as his opening salvo.  It was hard to keep a straight face.  I think they did get the message though that we aren’t simply going to share and get nothing in return.  Still not positive it will lead anywhere but at least we have made our feelings clear.

The meeting was over breakfast but they didn’t really have much breakfast available in the meeting room so I went afterwards and had a proper breakfast. Unfortunately no new fruits today. #disappointed

I did managed to have another fresh squeezed juice though at least mid-morning when I had an informal meeting with Themba (our President). Their fresh fruit juices are really very good.  I think we must get a good juicer at home. Helen also complains that it is a mission to clean. Not sure that should matter as we have 3 built in washers that can be instructed to clean it.

We had an afternoon ‘Presidents’ meeting from 12:30pm through to 5pm.  It is definitely the best formal meeting of the programme but thsimlimen that isn’t hard to make that standard given how poor some of the other meetings have been.  There were a few good presentations and discussions including one by Themba.  There was also a lengthy discussion on the future of that particular meeting.

At 5:30pm Themba and I agreed to meet to go to Sim Lim City.  We were told it was close by and we could walk which we then did. The problem in Singapore is that you cannot jaywalk at all and at numerous places we could not find a way to cross the road.  You then have to double back and go under the road using sub-ways. What looked like a short walk turned into a 40 minute walk. The closer we got to Sim Lim City the busier it got as well. Sim Lim City is a 6 floor electronic shopping mall.  My sons would call it heaven. Anything you could want electronic is found here. Few items are price marked though which means you end up negotiating on anything you want. And they come up with ridiculous negotiation techniques. I got a good price negotiated on a camera (for Helen) and then when I said ok I want to buy it the price went up by GST and also a credit card fee.  It was still a good price and so I said OK get me one and then suddenly the guy was trying to sell me a lens as well. When I rejected the lenfood courts purchase he suddenly didn’t have stock and he said no one else would as well. We did check with other stores who all said they had stock but they were at least $100 more than him. In the end I could get the camera at the same price or even better from the US rather.

By this stage Themba and I were hungry and so we set out to find a place to eat.  We walked through the local food court (which is ridiculously cheap) but I think Themba was put off by the Pig’s Organ Soup.  So we headed on to find a proper restaurant.  The Actuarial Society pays us for the time we are here (a daily allowance) and so we figured we could afford a nicer restaurant. On route to finding a better place we passed a few juice stalls and bought a freshly squeezed juice for R8 (less than $1).  A tenth of the hotel price and just as nice.

We eventually found a Japanese Yakatori restaurant. Themba was still skeptical but I persuaded him it wouldthemba be fine.  It turned out better than fine.  It turned out to be really good.  Anytime someone arrives or leaves they shouted out and so it was a constant noise of shouting ‘Hello’ or ‘Goodbye’ all with Japanese accents.  They were also quite sophisticated in that you did the ordering yourself onto an iPad. Just select the next dish you want and confirm it and they bring it to your table. You could enter one at a time or multiple at same time. Very clever and worked really well. We expected that it was going to be quite expensive because we ordered quite a lot in the end (13 items) but the whole bill including drinks and tip only came to R480 ($45) for the 2 of us. It was a great experience.

yakatoriWe didn’t make the mistake of trying to walk back to the hotel but rather took a taxi which took us about 4 minutes versus the 40 minute walk to get there (the fare being Singapore$ 7.71 – very accurate cab fare meters!).  We nipped into the mall next to the hotel (it is a big fancy mall with all the brands Michael likes – Hugo Boss, Polo, Armani etc) and found a Danish Ice Cream shop and got our deserts from there.  Now it is 9:30pm and I am feeling quite tired after walking in the heat and humidity and probably will head to bed shortly.

Singapore Day 3

guavaMy love for breakfast and Singapore buffet breakfasts continues to grow. This morning they had green guava which, while I have eaten guava, I have never eaten green guava before.  Now I have. It has a slight guava taste and was like eating ‘green’ guava (i.e. not ripe guava).  Some people apparently call them apple guava’s and that is probably a more fitting name because they are crispy like apples, green like apples and about the size of an apple.  But they are a guava (in case you’re confused).  I can’t wait for tomorrow to see what new fruit I can get to try.

After breakfast I had a meeting on professionalism. In the past this gone relatively well but maybe I am now bored of the content already because it seems the same things stay on the agenda for each meeting. And despite the Frenchman (who I cannot understand) not being present for the meeting (though he is here in Singapore), it still seemed to go on for too long.  I can’t even blame the chairman (who is South African and generally quite a good chairman), I just think it is that everyone wants to say something. I said nothing for the duration of the whole meeting. And those of you who know me will know that for me to do that in a meeting from 8:30am to 12:30pm, it must be exceptional circumstances or I am totally out of my depth.   I don’t think it is the latter though.  After the tea break I watched a guy opposite me (he is from the UK, I know him) nod off to sleep. It kept me entertained.  I also surreptitiously managed to take a photo him.  Even though he is looking slightly up and what looks like at the screen, you will see his eyes are totally closed (he is the guy in the blue jacket). Sorry about the grainy photo but I was taking it with my iPhone and I couldn’t really turn on the flash. The first shot has the bottle of water on my side of the table right asleepin line with him so I had to make a big show of opening and drinking from the bottle so I could move it out of the way. Only slightly confusing thing was that I was already drinking from another open bottle.  People next to me probably thought I had lost it.  But incredibly I don’t think they realized that I took the photo though.

After lunch I managed to get in some work time again and late afternoon I met with Paul (who is also here) for catch up, staff discussion, genera conversation. Paul had ventured into the Gen Re Singapore office today. I doubt he did any work but he just went in to say hi to everyone (not that he knows anyone there – just the branch manager). While we were talking I got in some more fruit intake this time by the way of Watermelon fresh squeezed juice.  It was very good but then at R100 ($10) per glass it ought to be.   I couldn’t stop myself from having a second one it was so good.

There was a conference dinner this evening.  But after having googled the venue on TripAdvisor during the earlier meeting and reading the first 10 reviews, I decided to give it a skip (everyone said ‘service is shocking’). That and the fact that I didn’t sleep that well last night and don’t feel 100% and I know I have 4 busy days ahead without a weekend in between made me decide to stay in and have room service instead.  I went for the Wanton Mee (you’ll have to google that one) and when I called to order it they asked whether I wanted it wet or dry. Now there is a choice I have never had before.  Hard to ask “What do you mean by wet or dry” so I just confidently said ‘dry of course’ like they were an idiot for even asking. Immediately I had done it I was worried that I was going to get dry, uncooked noodles but I resisted the urge to phone back and change the order. It was very good (as most meals are in Asia). It came with a soup (which was obviously the wet bit).

Despite it being Saturday tomorrow, it will be a ‘working day’ here at the conference.  I am SO looking forward to that.

 

Singapore Day 2

I woke this morning and it was still pitch dark outside and the first thought through my mind was ‘Oh no, jet lag’ but then I looked at the clock and it said 5:55am which meant I had slept through from about 11:20pm to 6am.  So hopefully that is the jet lag beaten straightaway.

I had a breakfast meeting at 7:30am. The lifts are so inefficient (or overused not sure which) that it can take 10 minutes to get from my 15th floor room down to the breakfast floor.  This morning it took 7 minutes.  You would have thought that architects would realize that 4 lifts for 22 floors won’t work. Breakfast made up for the frustration of standing at the lifts for 7 minutes.  There are at least 7 different stations starting with fruit juices, then fruit/cereals and then any type of hot breakfast you could ever want including Western (eggs to order), Chinese, Japanese, Indian etc. I reckon I could have tried 100 different things for breakfast this morning if I had wanted to. I didn’t. I did have some fruit (and their fruit is very tasty) and did try a new fruit I had never had before called jackfruit.  As I am a helpful bloke, this is what a jackfruit is:

“It is a species of tree of the mulberry family which is native to part Southeast Asia.  It has the largest tree-borne fruit of any tree in the world reaching up to 36 kgs. The flesh of the jackfruit is starchy and fibrous and is a source of dietary fiber. The flavor is comparable to a combination of apple, pineapple, mango and banana.” All that courtesy of Wikipedia.  I think it is partly right.  It is starchy and fibrous.  It doesn’t take like an apple, pineapple, mango and banana put together. In fact I reckon it didn’t have much taste at all. But at least I got my fiber for the day.

After breakfast and the meeting (which morphed into another post-breakfast meeting) were finished, I had the balance of the morning free to answers all the emails that had come in overnight and to finish my presentation that I had to do tonight. Then another lunch time meeting with the Australian’s (yes I did manage to slip in their rugby prowess – or lack thereosingapore viewf – at the moment).  At lunch all the dishes were marked by the hotel and I particularly liked the one label which said ‘Fish Tamarind’ and then underneath ‘Warning: May contain seafood’.  Really?!

This afternoon was occupied by almost 2 hours on the phone with my UK office (fortunately the room has a speaker phone) and then at 6pm I was picked up to speak at the Gen Re client dinner that had been arranged.  We were back to the Fullerton Hotel again for the dinner – this time in a private room. I spoke and then took questions and then we were served the dinner.  Nothing too exotic in the food (fortunately or unfortunately) but I did get to have crab for a 2nd night running. Crab is the local national food and so it seems appropriate that I should eat it once a day while I am here.

A relatively productive working day. Sorry about the lack of photos but the one I have posted is the view from my room which I thought would be appropriate to send because that is probably where I spent most of my day working! It was threatening to rain and did eventually do that shortly after we arrived at dinner. It is now even more humid than yesterday.

Asia week – Singapore

I left yesterday morning at 7am from my home in Cape Town and arrived today at 12:40pm (i.e. 6:40am) in Singapore.  Very close to 24 hours of travel and if you include the time to get through passport control and the taxi ride to the hotel then it was over 24 hours.

I am attending the International Actuarial Association meetings in Singapore and they last until Sunday and then I have 2 days working for Gen Re before I head home again.  As I said above, I left at 7am to catch a flight to Johannesburg and then to Hong Kong and then from Hong Kong to Singapore. If you know anything about Asia geography (and those of you who don’t are now googling a map of SE Asia), Hong Kong is actually about 2500 kms past Singapore so you might be asking why not simply fly to Singapore directly (which you can actually do out of Cape Town).  Two reasons actually – first the airfare on Cathay Pacific was 60% of what it would have cost on Singapore Airlines (go figure – fly more and pay 60% less) and then I also offered to do some presentations for the Gen Re offices while I am here and that included a client presentation in HK.

singapore2The flights over were all on time departing and either landed early or on time as well.  Asian efficiency in operation.  The service you get on Cathay Pacific is very good. They ‘hover’ and just when you want something and look up to ask them they are standing there as if they had anticipate you were about to ask for something. It is just over a 12 hour flight from Jhb to HK and so after having lunch and watching Fast and Furious 6 (and the way it ended means 7 must be on it’s way now too), I thought I should try and get some sleep as it was already 9pm in HK at that point (though only 3pm in SA). I did manage to sleep for about 3 hours and then was wide awake. So I started watching a TV series (BBC production) called Luther (police detective).  Recommended by one scoundrel of a nephew but it seems he has good taste in TV drama because I ended up watching the first 4 episodes of Season 1. By this stage it was about 10pm in SA and I reckoned I should try and get some more sleep again and managed to squeeze in about an hour before they turned the lights on to serve breakfast (it was midnight – who wants breakfast at midnight?!).  My only other compliant about Cathay Pacific was that when they served the lunch they only poured about 2 mouthfuls of wine into a big glass and they weren’t quick to top it up – maybe I look like a drunkard (though the guy next to me definitely did and he was knocking back the G&Ts).

I had about an hour to kill in HK after doing the usual transfer through security and so quickly nipped into the Cathay lounge for some more breakfast fruit (they have great fruit in Asia) and to download my emails.  Then it was onto the flight from HK to Singapore which was uneventful and landed at 12:40pm and I managed to watch another movie ‘Now you see me’ on that flight.  Passport control was a breeze and I was at the hotel by 1:20pm.  I am staying at the Pan Pacific Hotel (http://www.panpacific.com/en/singapore/Overview.html) It is a nice hotel (5-star and all) but not as nice as I would have expected it to be having stayed at other 5-star hotels in Asia previously.  I am on the 15th floor of about 38 floors.  The most impressive thing about the hotel room is that the shower has 4 nozzles (see pic)!

I had my first meeting this afternoon from 2-5pm. Given I only arrived at 1:20pm it didn’t give me much time to shower and change but I made it down with 5 minutes to spare. The meeting was tedious. No boring. No mind-numbingly boring. No tiresome. No humdrum. No dull. No actually all of them together. I reckon if I was chairing it the meeting would have been completed in about 30 minutes. It was basically a meeting sharing information which I already knew and everyone agreeing what they already knew and saying it numerous times in different ways.  With the jet lag, the only reason I didn’t fall asleep was because the room aircon was on 10 degrees Celcius (though might have been Fahrenheit it was so cold in there).

This evening the South Africans hadSingapore a dinner together at the Fullerton Hotel (http://www.fullertonhotel.com/default-en.html) which is an iconic Singapore Hotel. We opted for the buffet was given how expensive the cheapest wine was (R1000/$100 per bottle for the cheapest wine), was very good value.  There was a full Japanese buffet including sushi and sashmi (eat as much you like), a full seafood bar (prawns, scallops, mussels, crab, smoked salmon, oysters), dim sum, buffets meats (chicken, duck & pork), crab cooked about another dozen ways, fish cooked about 3-4 ways etc. There was also a full desert selection including about 10 different ways of doing chocolate (including a chocolate fountain), ice cream, creme brulee, apple tarts (that looked like chocolate to me) etc. We all ended up having 4 courses.

We elected to walk back to the hotel (about a 20 minute walk) but even though it was 10pm, the temperature was unaltered at about 30 degrees Celsius.  Lovely view of the harbour an city as we walked back and I probably lost about a kilogram on the walk back as well. It was a good way to get back though to the hotel and quite a pleasant way to finish the day/evening.

Now I am off to bed and hoping for a good night’s sleep as I have a breakfast meeting at 7:30am tomorrow.

 

Final thoughts/comments

This morning Helen and the children left for home at 10:05 on the KLM flight back to CT.  I went to work in London on a 10:20 flight. Both of our flights left on time and arrived on time. 2 more flights completed by KLM on time adding to their 91% on time performance record. Compare that to Air France’s record (who own KLM) of 71% on time and you must wonder how there can be such a difference. What I didn’t say in my previous blog posts is that not only did the 2 USA families miss their connecting flight through Charles de Gaulle (spending a night in an airport hotel) but one of the SA attendees had her Air France flight to Johannesburg cancelled entirely and my other sister and her family missed their connecting flight to Venice and arrived eventually at 11pm. I checked out Air France’s record into South Africa and they have 10% of their flights cancelled. Seriously … 1 in every 10 flights to Johannesburg are cancelled. Why would anyone travel on them knowing that? I’m going to outlaw using Air France for company travel – too risky for business purposes!

So here are some random thoughts on Bordeaux & Amsterdam – firstly on Bordeaux:

  1. It really is quite beautiful and a very relaxing place to visit. Spending a week there is really a great way to unwind.
  2. The French do really know how to make red wines … especially in Bordeaux. We didn’t really ever have a bad Bordeaux while we were there. I am not so sure they are as good at making white wines in that region though. The whites were nowhere near as good as the reds.
  3. They have crazy speed limits. You can drive 90 km/h on a rural (what I would call single track) road. And what is even more crazy is that people do drive that speed. Swerving around a tractor at that speed isn’t my idea of a relaxing holiday.
  4. French cooking is very good (generally) but it is also very rich. It is the sauces that they always have on the food that makes it so rich.
  5. Eating cheese in France is another whole experience. Why is it that cheese tastes so much better in France?
  6. The French always get a bad rap about being grumpy towards tourists. We never experienced that at any time in France. In fact I would say it was the reverse that people tried really hard to go out of their way for us rather.
  7. French time = African time. Book for 1pm and expect to get started at 1:30pm. Happened everywhere we went. Air France clearly works by the same rule. Never expect anything to operate on time in France.

And then some thoughts on Amsterdam:

  1. It is a vibrant, alive city. That is probably because 50% of the residents are under 34.
  2. There are as many canals in Amsterdam as there are streets. I just hope the guy with his finger in the dyke never pulls it out.
  3. It is definitely worth visiting if you are coming to Europe. Just give yourself more than 1.5 days. We would have loved to spend more time there. The consensus of the family was that we would like to go back and spend more time in Amsterdam.
  4. It is a bit of crazy place though. You can get anything you want – drugs from the Coffeeshops (we actually had one around the corner from the hotel and only discovered it this am when we left!); prostitutes; every type of food you can think of etc.
  5. Everyone has a bicycle. They say that there are around 750 000 residents in Amsterdam and they reckon 600 000 bicycles.
  6. You can do anything on a bicycle (those were Michael’s words yesterday). We saw a man with a sleeping baby in his basket, women riding side saddle while sitting on the back, talking on your phone, taking a video/picture on your phone while cycling.  You name it they were doing it and we most likely saw it.
  7. KLM is a very efficient airline. If you’re looking for comfort try another airline. If you want efficiency and on-time departures & arrivals – travel with KLM.

We had such a good 10 days that we have no desire to go home and back to real life. We were tempted to just stay in France or Netherlands. Unfortunately back to reality tomorrow!

Amsterdam

pancakes for breakfastWe spent the whole day in Amsterdam today. As our hotel charges €25 for breakfast (per person) we didn’t have breakfast in the hotel but rather went out and found a restaurant along the road serving breakfast. When in Amsterdam, do as the Dutch and have pancakes for breakfast. They were as good as they looked. We then headed down to the main canal to pick up a canal tour. We had hoped to buy a hop-on-hop-off ticket but due to the Gay Parade (which seemingly takes place on the canals), many of the canals were closed and hence we could only do a tour.

boatIt was a 1 hour 15 minute tour that took longer as they had to avoid certain canals that were closed. Unfortunately that messed with the automatic commentary but we still got a general sense of Amsterdam and the important sights. The buildings are amazingly thin and that is because there were restrictions on how wide a building could be as land and canal frontage was limited. That didn’t prevent the wealthy people buying two lots and building one house behind two separate facades. A lesson in regulation seldom achieves what it sets out to achieve. The houses also lean – some because the wooden pylons they were built on have rotted slightly over the years and some because the owners wanted people to think their house was bigger than it really was. It all adds to the charm of the city now.

We also passed at least one of the famous ‘Coffee shops’. You don’t find coffee in them but they are in fact where you can buy cannabis and other narcotics which are legal in Amsterdam. The other incredible thing is the number of houseboats moored on the canals. Many of them cannot go anywhere and are not made to go anywhere – they just float and are lived in. Amsterdam City is no longer giving out permits for moorings. This has resulted in the value of permits increasing significantly. You can buy an apartment for the same price you can buy a houseboat.  The cheapest houseboat now sells for around €80000 and that won’t be a great houseboat or a great location.

heinekenAfter the canal trip we thought we would go and visit the Van Gogh museum (on recommendation of a colleague who used to live in Amsterdam) but the line for entering was so long that it lost it’s appeal. We will have to do it when we come back one day. We went instead to the Heineken Experience (also on the recommendation of the same colleague). It is a basically an explanation of how Heineken started and how they make the beer. You get to drink a few around the tour as well. There is only so much beer you can drink in a short time (or at least I can only). They also instructed us on how to drink beer to ensure you don’t get the bitter taste. There were various games and machines spread around too that you could play with including one that tested your beer pouring (or drafting) skill. I tried and was told I need more practice. Helen did it once and was told she was a master drafter … clearly random.

view over amsterdamWe had purchased a ticket which entitled us to a hamburger on the roof top of the Heineken Experience and so once we had completed the tour we headed to the roof for our lunch. They were making the burgers fresh on a grill and it was a great lunch with a view over the city.

By this stage the City was filling up significantly with people arriving for the parade. We had spent a significant amount of time walking around and so we headed back to the hotel for the rest of the afternoon. A late afternoon nap in hotel room always seems to work wonders. On the way back we did walk past some of the famous ‘windows’ with a few ladies displaying themselves. They were the ones I had missed yesterday and might have missed them again had it not been for Helen pointing them out to me.

This afternoon while I was working on my computer I pulled open the desk drawer (as one does to see what they contain) only to find a loose tooth in the one draw.  Not kidding! I think I might need to point it out to the hotel staff. But I will only do that after they fix the hot water problem which we currently have. We discovered it at 10pm when Helen wanted to warm up with a bath and found only luke warm water. We are still waiting for them to resolve it even though half way through typing this post I phoned and they said someone was on their way up right now (#nowgettingirritated).

dinner amsterdamWe headed out at 7pm for dinner and went to the same area as yesterday. The only difference was that the number of people had multiplied and it was very festive. Clearly a lot of drinking had happened today before, during and after the parade. We did eventually find a table at an Italian restaurant who took forever to take our order and bring the food. Nothing to do but to wait and watch the people trying (because they weren’t that stable many of them) walk past. We stopped and bought American ice creams (Ben & Jerry’s) at a Sushi place (again not kidding) on the way back to the Hotel.

Now if only they would come and fix the water problem ….

Bordeaux to Amsterdam

Everyone started leaving this morning to return home. We missed the early departures (they left at 6:30am and 7am). We had breakfast at our usual time of 9am and then started packing up everything. By just after 10 am we had said our goodbyes and were on the road back to the airport at Bordeaux. The GPS said it would take 1 hour 10 mins but we had been warned that because of traffic around Bordeaux it would take longer. They were right.  It took about 1 hour 40 minutes. Disposing of the rental car, finding the check in counter and checking in our luggage all went smoothly and easily.

By this stage we knew that the first batch traveling had about an hour delay on their flight and as they were meant to have about 1 hour 40 minutes to connect this was now down to 40 minutes (and at Charles de Gaulle airport that means you miss you plane). Our flight (on the other hand) to Amsterdam left on time (well we were officially 3 minutes late but by airlines standards that is on time). In fact KLM have a very good on time departure record (91% of flights leave on time which compares to 76% for most USA based carriers). Your trivia fact for today, in June 2013 SAA was named as the World’s Best Airline for Ontime departures.

We arrived at about 3:30pm into Amsterdam and by that stage it was confirmed that the two USA based families had missed their flight and it had taken them 3 hours to get sorted out. They have the night in Paris airport hotel and are booked on a flight tomorrow now. The joys of flying Air France & Delta. In case you are wondering, Air France’s ontime departure record is 71% which is one of the lowest for a major international airline (#whyamInotsurprised).

We took a taxi into our hotel in Amsterdam. We are staying at The College Hotel (http://thecollegehotel.com/en/home) which was booked by Michael after he got some recommendations from a class mate.  You might be wondering why such a strange name – well that’s because it is a college for hotel students. It was originally a school (founded in 1895) and you can still imagine all the school kids running around. The converted it to a hotel in 2005 and is run by students training at various hotel training schools. It is a very nice hotel at a very reasonable price by European standards and is ideally located. I would suggest it to anyone visiting Amsterdam. They are a little slow with check ins but they are very deliberate and you know exactly what you are getting for the price you’re paying. The guy who showed us the room even managed to point out the toilet to Helen! He was so nervous, he was makinamsterdamg Helen nervous.

We went out hoping to take a canal tour this evening but they were all already fully booked for today. Instead we walked around and then found a very vibey part where there were numerous restaurants. We chose the Argentinian steakhouse and really enjoyed the good steaks we had while watching the passers-by. Tomorrow there is a Gay Pride march in Amsterdam and they have warned us that the canal boats might be less frequent etc. Trust us to be in Amsterdam on a Saturday with a gay pride march.

Lovely evening in Amsterdam with the temperature somewhere in the 30 degrees (but quite humid as well). We enjoyed the walk back to our hotel again. Unfortunately it wasn’t the same route as we took when we left the hotel because Michael and Helen had see numerous scantily clad ladies leaning out of the windows on that route and hadn’t bothered to point them out to me. I was dutifully leading the family and not letting my eyes wander. My mother will be proud of me …

Final hurrah

view from braaiToday was our last full day in France. Everybody just wanted to chill out and relax (except Helen and my sister-in-law Sue who went for a run this morning). The gaggle of girls had been up late last night. I went to bed at 1:20am and they were very much still awake at that point. At about 12:30am there had been a loud shriek from the room.  It had happened just after a loud (male) voice had shouted out. I figured one of the guys had climbed up the outside of the Chateau and scared the girls. At breakfast this morning my suspicion was confirmed.

Helen and I went into Castillon to do some shopping at the local supermarket (more like a hypermarket). It turned out to not be a very successful trip because the shop was rather boring.  We did get one or two items as presents and a few things for ourselves too. We managed to also figure out the French instructions for filling up the car using our credit card (despite my brother-in-law not being able to do it last Sunday!) and we headed backed to relax for the balance of the afternoon.  By this stage it was already 32 degrees and the temperature was rising steadily. At 8pm this evening it was 35 degrees. It must still be around 30 degrees outside. The nephews & nieces have just finished having a late night swim. Clothes are strictly optional for sleeping in tonight!

braaiThis evening we had our final dinner together. We decided to do the traditional SA thing and have a braai together. The Chateau provided the meat, salads and fruit and we did the braaiing. Somehow or other my brother & I ended up as the tongmasters for the night. And at 35 degrees without a braai in front of you, you can imagine how hot it was in front of the braai. 2 beers and 4 cokes later and I still don’t feel even remotely rehydrated yet. They provided a ton of meat (literally) for us.  There was a quarter chicken, a piece of sausage and a piece of steak – one of each for everyone. There was a mountain of meat left at the end.  The ice cream at end went down very well.

We also had the ‘official’ family photos tonight. It is a nightmare herding us at the best of times and during a photo session it becomes even worse. Josh did a great job of trying to organise everyone. He may have started to regret marrying into this family after tonight! We never have managed to have a good family photo in the past so I am hoping this one is better than usual (both the larger family shot and also our own family photo).

last supperIt remained only to say goodbye to those leaving early tomorrow to catch their flights back to the USA (first group leaves at 6:30am). About half of the group will leave before us and we are unlikely to see before they leave. It was really fond farewells for everyone. No one can believe that it was a week ago that we all arrived in France together. It really has been a great time together and we are all incredibly grateful for my parents facilitating it. Individual families (and family members) are already planning trips to SA or USA or London or Switzerland or somewhere to meet up again in 2014. It has been a great time together – we will have to replicate it again soon.

Le Picnic

We were up quite early today as Helen and 3 other insane people in the family decided to go mountain biking. As I was awake already as well I went to breakfast with them and then they headed out on their bike tour of Bordeaux. They got back just before 11am and seem to enjoy it (having cycled almost 30 kms according Endomondo).

picnicWe had decided to book a picnic lunch at the winery we had visited yesterday (Chateau Font-Vidal) and got back there at 12pm (as booked). Of course they were not ready for us (this is France and they are never ready for you) so we killed a little time with some photo taking and general messing around. The picnic was ideal for lunch – bread, cheese (all goats cheese but 6 different varieties), cold meat, crudites (not the same thing as luddites), pate, fruit and of course wine (all of which came from the region). The older folks ate inside at the table, the younger ones (including Helen and myself because we form part of the younger crew here) ate outside on the grass. It was very relaxed and enjoyable.  After lunch we played some rugby including doing some lineout jumping by the more athletic ones. linout

By the time we left the temperature was already reading 30 degrees C and it was still on the increase. Pretty much the only thing you could do was swim or sleep though another 4 crazy people went off horse riding in the afternoon.  Apparently all the horses were French speaking and didn’t take instructions in English. We had a family meeting to discuss various matters at 4:30pm and then some family photos at 5:30pm. The latest addition to our family (Josh) is a professional photographer and he has the tough job of taking some formal family photos while we are here.

After that it was some more eating again. Dinner this evening for me was seared tuna as starter and then beef steak. I asked for medium rare and got the steak done blue instead. I knew that the French undercooked steak but I could still hear the mooing of the cow when I put my ear up to it. The other main choice was rabbit and many people (including most of my family) tried that. I got the best of both worlds because I ate the most well cooked beef bits and then traded the balance for Michael’s rabbit and then I finished off the rest of what Helen had rejected of her rabbit (I am thinking of a few friends who are reading this post and will be horrified by us eating rabbit).

game playingThis evening we had some more reminiscing again by a close long standing family friend who is here at my parent’s invitation (I remember staying with them when I was 5 years old) and my brother. This was followed by a quiz evening organised by the most competitive member of our family – my sister (Meryl). It was a quiz separated by 50 years. One set of questions on 1963 events and one set on 2013 events.  Some were ridiculously hard – like which island off Iceland was formed in 1963 through an undersea volcanic eruption. Who would ever know that?! None of us did. To save you the trouble of googling it – the island name is Surtsey (your trivia fact for today). Some were a lot easier like which Pirates of the Caribbean star was born in 1963 … is there any other star but Johnny Depp? Unfortunately even though we thought we had a good team we finished in the middle of the pack this time. If we hadn’t crossed out so many correct answers we might have done a little better though!

It is now 11:40pm and it is dead still (wind wise) but not noise wise. The girls (starting at 13 up to 24) have decided to all move into together for tonight and so there are a riot of them (what else could the collective noun be for a bunch of noisy young ladies?!) in the room diagonally across from us. Who knows when they will go to sleep but I am pretty sure it will be after us though.  It is still VERY hot and I doubt the temperature is less than about 25/26 degrees right now. No aircon in the Chateau but at least we have a fan. Still going to be a hot night tonight …
